If you have an air conditioner and it suddenly stopped working, don't worry! This DIY article will help you to fix your Air Conditioning problems ... A typical HVAC unit needs to be replaced if the compressor gets too hot or if it quits on its own. But what happens when your central cooling starts giving off a screechy noise? This can be indicative of a terrible number of different problems. The good news is that these problems are super easy to repair on your own without having to call for professional help. Problems With The Refrigeration System The first thing you want to check for when you hear a screeching sound coming from your AC unit is the refrigerant pressure switch that regulates the refrigerant pressure within your condenser. To test it, turn off the power going to your air conditioner and then unplug it. Now, take a look at the wires going into the back of it and look for a small plug with two or three wires in it. That's where you actually plug in for testing purposes. To test it, you're going to want to take one of the wires that isn't plugged into the plug and connect it onto the pressure switch terminal. Take the other wire connected to the plug and ground it. Once you have those wires connected securely, turn on your AC unit. If it runs normally without screeching noises coming from the condenser, you'll need to replace your pressure switch if that's where it's coming from. Problems With The Compressor The problem with the compressor is usually related to one of two things: a bad run capacitor or the compressor itself. To test the run capacitor, turn off your air conditioner and then start it up again. If you hear a screeching sound coming from the outside of your unit, it's likely that you have a bad run capacitor. You can check it to be sure by removing the cover on your unit and checking to see if it's burnt or torn in any way. To replace it, turn off the power going to your AC unit and unplug it. Take out the old capacitor and replace it with a brand new one. Problems With The Fan Motor If you hear screeching noises coming from your fan motor, try turning off your AC unit. If that doesn't stop the noise, you'll need to open up your air conditioner and remove the cover from the condenser. Check to see if the fan is making noises or not. It could be the blade of the fan itself that's causing it to scrape against the driving belt, which is a pretty common problem for air conditioners. If you find that your fan has been damaged, you should replace it and then replace your belt as well. Problems With The Compressor Relocation Bracket The compressor relocation bracket is what attaches the compressor to the condenser. If it starts scraping up the condenser, that's actually a sign of a problem with it because they're not supposed to be attached by screws. A lot of times, you'll find that people will just cover up the screws or attach something there to stop that noise. However, even if your compressor is in good shape, you can't just attach parts elsewhere without inserting screws into them first. The best way to deal with a compressor relocation bracket is to get an air conditioning repair specialist who can make some repairs on your own. If you don't have someone around that can do this for you, you're going to have to replace the compressor since it's what's causing the problem. Problems With The Motor Fan Blade
The motor fan blade is the part that sits inside your unit and blows air across the condenser. If it becomes bent or broken, you'll hear a screeching noise coming from it. These can be fairly easy to repair. The only problem is that you may need to replace your fan blade and/or the motor it's bolted onto for it to work again. The very first thing you're going to want to do is turn off your AC unit and unplug it from the wall outlet. Take out the fan blade known as a grill with a screwdriver or pry tool. Remove the screws that hold the blade down and then set them aside. Now, remove the motor fan blade that you just removed. Take this blade and set it aside with the other one you just removed. You'll need to use a hole saw drill bit to make new holes in your fan blade so that you can screw in a new motor fan blade. You're going to want to replace both blades at the same time so that they are in line with each other but not screwed down completely yet. Go ahead and screw the new motor fan blade onto the assembly of the fan blade that you saved. Be sure to put it in with the right side up and screw it down tightly. Now, do the same thing with your new fan blade. Once you have both blades screwed in, you can turn your power back on to your unit and check to see if it works properly. If it does, you can finish putting everything back together and continue using your air conditioner.
